[net.consumers] Ultraviolet-blocking Sunglasses ?

piety@hplabs.UUCP (Bob Piety) (06/05/84)

I recently read an article about premature vision degeneration due to UV
getting through ordinary sunglasses. The article recommended special
amber/yellow lenses that do not pass the UV.
A local sports shop had Ski-Optiks brand sunglasses that claimed to block UV
but cost $20 - $40 for plastic lenses.
Does anyone know:
     1. Where to buy such glasses at a lower cost (or know of cheaper
brands?)
     2. Do sunglasses with glass lenses block UV? Prescription
glasses/sunglasses?

Thanks in advance for any information on this subject.

CNN did a small segment on this very subject recently. They said the
sun glasses would the percentage of ultraviolet light that they block.
I remember them mentioning that they found a couple pairs of Foster Grants
to block nearly all UL light. I remember one of the pairs they had tested
blocked 99.9%.

Several brands of sunglasses provide 100% UV protection. Many
others are still pretty good, providing 90%+. Most glass lenses
provide IR protection, but very very few plastic lenses do. Plan
to spend some bucks for something good, though.
