How about having no joint accounts at all!! (Sometimes this isn't possible--for example, most people like to hold securities jointly.) Another thing to consider--if you don't have a will, some states will split your estate equally between the remaining family members. In Colorado, and I believe in most states, the phrase you want to use is "Joint Tenants (or Tenancy) With Right of Survivorship" - you may see this abbreviated JTWROS.
