[net.consumers] BUG ZAPPERS

dat@bunker.UUCP (Dick Tusia) (07/06/84)

I am in the market for a bug zapper. If anybody has bought one recently
I would like to here about how they have worked out for them. I need to cover
about 1/2 acre with it and I am located directly on a small lake.

last Sunday's "Taking Advantage" on ABC, quoted from Business Week:

" be warned that quite a few are ineffective against mosquitos "

make sure to read the fine print on the package or advertising.

If you do buy a bug zapper--be kind to your neighbors and do leave the
thing popping and zapping all night long!

I can't remember where this came up,
but some place took one of the bug-zapper
companies to court (and won) because
they had shown that they DON'T WORK.
I have no personal experience in the
matter--I'm just passing along what
I heard on the radio.

Contrary to some of the reports seen here, some bug zappers do work.
If you doubt that, stop by my house some morning and I will show you the
pile of carcasses from the previous evening. In the spring when the
little beetles first hatch, I've been known to have 2-3 inch piles generated
overnight.

Problems: They only work when the light from the zapper is brighter (in the
UV span) than the sun or other nearby lights. This means that daytime bugs
like mesquitos, houseflys, etc., aren't particularly affected by them.

For Official Use Only

Bug Zappers. Please folks, if you own one and live in a close
neighborhood, DON'T leave it on all night. You may take great
comfort in your bed that the gadget is zapping the local bug
population, but there is nothing more annoying to a neighbor
who has to listen to the constant Snap, Crackle, and Pop
drifting through his bedroom window all night. Please shut the
thing off when you retire. Zapping all night is not going to
amount to a hill of beans as far as the local bug concentration
is concerned. By all means use the zapper when you are outside
if it makes you feel better, but think about the neighbors when
you go in. I have a neighbor who has two of those industrial
sized zappers. They only left them on once. Everyone in a
three house radius mentioned it the next day. The guy did not
keep it on all night again, but then again he is very considerate.

I have heard that you can buy bait and put it in a dish that
attaches to the bottom of a bug zapper to attract the flies.

The electrocution of insects by "bug zappers" causes interference
on nearby shortwave receivers.
