[net.consumers] Inexpensive Zykkor Binoculars

dhc@exodus.UUCP (David H. Copp) (07/22/84)

Yesterday I bought a pair of 7 x 50 Zykkor binoculars for $30,
yup, $30 bucks! They are no competition at all for good binoculars,
but they are a lot better than K-Mart models. I have a hunch
that Zykkor (Japanese--with Hong Kong assembly?) is trying to
crack the U.S. market and is giving extra-good prices to build up
some volume.

I bought them from Camera World and Sound, 104 West 32nd St., NYC, 10001,
(212) 563-8770. They even had 7 x 35 binocs for $20, but they didn't
focus closer than about 40 feet.

Has anybody heard of Zykkor? Will the lenses dissolve in the rain?

I don't have any other factual information, but their name sounds
to close to Nikkor for it to be a coincidence. I'll bet that if
you look hard enough, you will find that Zykkor is an American
importing enterprise that buys whatever it can get cheaply overseas,
puts their name on it, and charges what the traffic will bear.

Reminds me of the first building you see when entering Tijuana (Mex) on
foot (you don't dare take your car down there if you want it in the
same condition when you return): the "Hotel Hiltom". I wouldn't go
near the place for fear of catching something.
