[net.consumers] Passports as ID

jrb@wdl1.UUCP (jrb ) (08/14/84)

Has anyone else ever tried to cash a cheque in this country using a
US passport as ID? It should be legal ID anywhere in the world. People
are VERY reluctant to accept it as a picture ID with a credit card.
They say "Don't you have a driver's license?" Gack.

A friend of mine was hassled once when walking in the vicinity of LA
airport because he only had a pilot's license and passport, no
drivers license. They let him proceed when a friend of his with
a drivers license vouched for him.
There is a small amount of reason to this, from the authority's point
of view. If your passport or pilots license is missing, and you're not
using it, you may not be aware that it is missing, and the police
probably are NOT notified when such are reported missing, or replaced.
How hard is it to get a duplicate pilot's license?

It's easy to get a duplicate pilots license. Just send two dollars
to Oklahoma City and wait.

I think most places want ID they can trace. I don't know if it is
legal for stores to trace driver's licences, I doubt it is easy to
trace passport numbers.

I personally wouldn't mind a better national form of ID. I recently
had to give in and get a Visa card, because it seems nobody will cash checks
unless you have a credit card they accept.
