<gulp> I've also encountered and am impressed with the on-line verification systems for credit cards. As noted many stores now have modified telephone sets that can read the account number and expiration date from the mag strip on the back of the card, so all the salesperson has to enter is the amount. I've also been pleased to see carbonless VISA charge slips showing up in the NYC area (Amex, take a hint), since credit card fraud is a significant problem. Until then - ask for the carbons from your sales slip - Do NOT give out your card # or expiration date to people who call claiming to be banks or credit card companies. If they want to initiate communications with you, they'll WRITE. - make sure YOUR card is returned to you after each sale. and, of course, report a missing card immediately. Bill Mitchell (whuxl!wjm)
