You are correct.  Most of these "mechanics" are people who have no business
doing what they do.  The big shocker in my case was that not only did the
"mechanic" not know what he was doing, but the service manager (who was much
older) didn't know either.

The point is I prefer to do business where I am assured that the person
working on my car (that is, when I don't feel like doing the job myself)
is qualified.  Apparently, Sears prefers to save money by hiring these
"incompetents" than to insure customer satisfaction by hiring people who
know what the hell they are doing.  I would be willing to pay a bit more 
if I could know that a better person was working on my car.  Unfortunately,
there is no way of knowing this.  When I was a mechanic, I saw many horror
stories that made me decide to do all my own work on my car whenever possible.
