I'm in the process of getting settled in my first "real" home since leaving school, and have been carefully watching the newspaper for sales on things I need. Why is it that I can never buy the items that are on sale? I make sure I get to the store early in the sale week, but I hear things like: "We only had one to start with" "I don't think we're going to get any more of those" "Sorry, we don't give rainchecks" etc, etc, etc. Now, I'm not going for closeout items, these are regular sale items that aren't in stock. Seems like a resonable policy would be to give an extra 10% off the sale price if the item isn't in stock. Anybody else run into this kind of thing? It's almost a "bait and switch" tactic. They bring you in with nice low prices on things they don't have so you'll buy the regularly priced (and more expensive to start with) product. -- Scott Wiesner {allegra, ucbvax, cornell}!nbires!scott

xxx I think stores that run sales are required (by state law in most states?) to carry a reasonable stock or to state "quantities limited" in the ads. If they run out, I think they're required to give out rainchecks. -- Kenton Lee, Bell Labs - WB 1D302, x7178 wb3g!kfl or hoxna!kfl

In our local area the Zayre's stores (a Target/K-Mart like discount house) has a stated policy in their adds that if the item is advertised other than as a close-out or limited quantity item, if the store runs out you get a rain-check and a 10-15% (I forget which) discount. Our only experience with this policy was a positive one - the clerk cheerfully gave us the raincheck with the discounted price marked right on it. -- ________ ( ) Don Stanwyck @( o o )@ 312-979-3062 ( || ) Cornet-367-3062 ( \__/ ) ihnp4!ihuxr!stanwyck (______) Bell Labs @ Naperville, IL

If you frerquently run into cases where stores advertise a sale item, and are out of it, and won't give rain checks, COMPLAIN. I think most state laws require a store to have a reaonable number of the sale items, or else to indicate otheriwse in its ads. Very effective complaints can be made to: the store manager, with a copy of the letter to your congressman. I've gotten spectacular results (and fast) this way. - Toby Robison (not Robinson!) allegra!eosp1!robison or: decvax!ittvax!eosp1!robison or (emergency): princeton!eosp1!robison

Here in California the law *requires* rain-checks *unless* the add specifies limited quantities, stock-on-hand, or some similar type of disclaimer.
