Thanks loads for the wide response to my question about furnace anticipator settings. We had just moved in, and the thermostat anticipator was set right off the scale... and the furnance manual didn't mention the proper setting. I have now set the anticipator to a value which runs the furnace on a (for example) three minute on/12 minute off cycle, where before it was set for a two minute on/eight minute off cycle. After reading some comments, I stood next to the furnace for a cycle, and yup, the burner turned on a minute before the furnace actually started running. By eliminating the extra cycles, I'm saving 45 minutes of burner on time per day... not bad! Many suggested turn-back timer thermostats. I have one, but had doubts about whether it was working; when we went to bed, the house was still cooling down; when I got up, the house was warm (70/60 day/night settings). But a couple of days ago, one of my wife's cats decided to dissasemble the bathroom cabinet at 4 a.m., and I got up to chastise it. Nearly froze my buns off! Take it from me, get one. They save energy, and decrease comfort not a whit! Ron Wanttaja (ssc-vax!wanttaja) "Long shall you linger, under the knives of my virtuosi!"
