[net.consumers] Replacement Insulating Windows

jcp@brl-tgr.ARPA (Joe Pistritto <jcp>) (11/14/84)

I am in the process of contracting to have the 25 year old
wood double-hung windows and 22 year old storm windows in my house
replaced with the new Thermopane insulating type windows. I have been
quoted a cost (installed) of about $300 a window here on the East Coast.
The window type being used is made by US Steel (now called Alstate).

Does anyone have any info about this type of window, or know if this
is a good price? (If I shouldn't send this here, please tell me
where I should...)

At $300 per window, if you invested that in tax-free bonds, you
would get $21 per window per year and still have your principal.
Unless you need new windows, I can't see how Conductive-Metal
Thermo-something windows can save any money over wood storm windows,
let alone $21 per window per year. I have 200 year old windows with
25 year old storm windows and would have to save 19 windows times
$21 per window per year or about $400 per year to save.
Attic insulation, furnace dampers, zone room control and warm
clothing are much more cost effective than new storm windows
for old ones.
