Well - it appears now I will probably be spending an extended period of time in europe next year (hear that paul?) and I have a couple questions: 1. Does anybody have any good recommendations concerning short-wave radios? cu's last report was several years ago. Many years ago when I spent a summer in germany I had a much appreciated radio-shake cheepy, but it has since been ripped off. What's good these days? 2. I am thinking about buying a car over there. Does anybody know how this works? has anybody done it before? are there names of firms you have dealt with? How does it compare to buying a car over here? thanks. tim budd, dept. of cs, the univ. of arizona. noao!arizona!budd

I have a Sony 2001, and it works very weell. Ther model 2002, the revision, is basically the same but with a few improvements. The 2002 is about $175 from 47th street Photo in New York. For slightly less money ($125), you can get a Panasonic RF6500 from the same place. I hear sound quality is comprable to the 2002, but less sensitivity and selectivity than the digital 2002. Finally, for about $60 you can get a Panasonic RF083 which is supposed to be fine in Europe (where stations are quitte strong). For more current info, consult the 1985 Radio/TV Handbook, which will have up to date reviews and info. As far as the car goes, there is a book around (terribly out of date) called <<How to Buy a Used Volkswagen in Europe>>. My parents used it to do just that when we were there in 1974 on sabbatical. -Ben Leimkuhler
