[net.consumers] Answering machines that record time

tamir@ucbvax.ARPA (Yuval Tamir) (12/19/84)

I would like to purchase an answering machine that
records the time that each message is recorded.
I don't care about any other fancy features (such as remote, etc.).
One example of such an answering machine is the Toshiba TCD-50.
One mail-order catalog lists the TCD-50 for $229.
I would appreciate getting comments on the TCD-50 or any
other answering machine that records the time of each message.

The prices in the catalog where I saw the TCD-50 are rather high
so I expect that this and similar machines can be bought at a lower
price elsewhere.
Therefore, I am also looking for suggestions for
cheaper mail-order sources as well as for discount stores
in the SF Bay Area that may carry such answering machines.

About six weeks ago I posted a request for info on answering
machines that record the time of the call with each call.
In case anybody is interested, here is what I learned.

There are two types of machines that record the time of the
call with each call:
(1) A voice synthesizer announces the time (and date) when a call is
received and that announcement is also recorded on the
    tape of incoming calls.
(2) The machine encodes the time (and date) on the call on
the tape. That info is presented on an LCD display when
    you play back the tape.

Toshiba makes a "type (1)" machines. I was told that this
machine is to be avoided ("it doesn't work").
I didn't investigate further since I prefer the "type (2)" scheme.
Sanyo makes a "type (2)" machine. Model 4000 has remote
and costs $159, model 2000 doesn't have remote and costs $115.
I have been using the 2000 for a couple of weeks and
am very happy with its performance.
