[net.consumers] Mazda 626 bumper crash resistance?

We are thinking of getting a Mazda 626. When we looked at one, we
noticed that the bumper is coated with what appears to be plastic.
I would think that the slightest fender-bender would rip it to
shreds. If you have been involved in any accident with a 626 that
involves the bumpers, I'd appreciate it if you'd drop me a line and
let me know how fast the collision was, how serious the damage was,
about about how much it cost. Any other things you do or don't like
about the car (e.g. how easy it is to get service?) would be appreciated
too.

This is my one pet peeve about my Honda Accord. The slightest tap on
the bumper (e.g. backing into a pole) and it's $170 for a new bumper.
Considering it's supposedly a 5 MPH bumper, and Honda has since gone
down to a 2.5 MPH bumper, I'm not impressed. Other than that, I love
the car. Too bad they don't make a 4 door hatchback or wagon.
