[net.consumers] shoddy Sony walkmans

phil@amd.UUCP (Phil Ngai) (03/10/85)

My thanks for all the responses to my inquiry concerning my heater.
Now I understand. And I have another question.

I was looking at a Sony Walkman WM10 model II, which is the skinny
one, in a store. The buttons kept sticking when I tried it. And the
max volume was still comfortable, which I consider too low. (I have
a Toshiba tiny FM personal radio which can quickly make you deaf.)

So I asked my sister, who has a WM10-II what her experience was.
It was the same for her, the buttons stick on hers. I am starting
to think this model has a design problem and is something to avoid.

Does this seem like a reasonable assessment or have I just been
unlucky in choosing samples? And is there a "walkman" cassette player
you can recommend? I already have a personal radio so I don't need
the radio part. Would it be too much to hope for Nakamichi to come
out with a personal cassette player?

Don't know about the '10, but the WDM-6 or 6C is a true high
fidelity product (recorder/player). Even then, a friend of mine
got one out of spec and had it "fixed" several times before Sony
gave him his money back. He then bought another one after a pause
of a few months and it, like mine, was fine.

Well, I went looking for a Walkman a little while ago. If you have the
money, get a WM DC2. It's the best play-only Walkman you can get. Has
Dolby B/C, a real head, low wow and flutter and you can shake the thing
around as much as you want with no effect to the music playing. It's
essentially the fourth refinement of the Walkman 2 line, and has very
similar guts, with the exception of the quartz crystal driven DD motor
and the better head. I owned a WM 2 for three years, and it seems that
Sony has worked out many of the bugs. The DC2 has great stereo separation.
It's one of the two "Walkman Professional" models. (The Walkman DD and
the Sports Walkman are also WM 2 derived models.)

It's good enough that I can dub tapes (for other people!) from it on to
my Nak. I just lose some high frequencies.

I suggest you look at Toshiba, I think they're better than the Sonys.
In Chicago, they're sold at Schaak, K-MART, and McDade.

I bought the SONY Walkman (WM-F10) more than a year ago, when it was
just introduced in the U.S. market. Till now it has not given me a
single problem. It is the pocket size one with cassette player and
FM radio. In fact, it's sound quality is much better than most other
walkmans I have encountered, its buttons don't stick and high
volumes can make you deaf. BUT, it is expensive --- I think in most
places it is approx. $100 BUT IT IS GOOD.
