[net.consumers] Book Club scam

jcp@brl-tgr.ARPA (Joe Pistritto <jcp>) (03/29/85)

Yesterday, an interesting thing happened... I received
a box from the US Book of the Month Club, containing 4 books,
(2 on poetry, one children's stories, and Stress Management), along
with a cheery note from the USBOTMC thanking me for joining and that
I would receive enrollment forms shortly.

Only problem, was, I never joined... At this point, I assume
this is a scam, and they're trying to get me to join by sending me a
pile of books they have overstock of or something and getting my name
off a mailing list. As I understand the mail laws, I can just send
them a letter detailing the fact I didn't join, and am under no
obligation to return the (unordered) goods. Is this correct?

Watch out for this, I suspect lots of people were on the
mailing list they got my name off of.

I have been in the same case except I later found out
someone did it as a hoax to me.

You are correct that you are under no obligation to return
unsolicited mail (or books) as you described. Enjoy(?) your freebie.
