[net.consumers] Thanx for the tile glue responses

heneghan@ihu1m.UUCP (Joe Heneghan) (06/25/85)

Thanks for the great response to my query, here's
what I found out:
1. Sandpaper(disc) gets gummed up real fast
2. Paint remover works a little
3. COLOR TILE makes a product called "OLD ADHESIVE AND
PAINT REMOVER SOLVENT" which works great. You slap
this stuff (it looks like melted blue jello) on and
let it set for 25 minutes and the adhesive comes off
like liver patte'.

Assuming this product is what I think it is, you might want to also try
looking at a hardware store for paint removers. I used a lot of that stuff
when I refinished the fireplaces on an old house I used to rent; it came
in very large cans. (I didn't know it would work on tile adhesive, though).
For paint, it makes the paint crinkle up and assume a texture a lot like
the layer that forms on top of pudding - i.e., soft but it sticks together
so it can be peeled off.

The reason I say "try other places" is I've found Color Tile apparently
makes a lot of their profit not on the tile (which is relatively low-priced),
but on accessories for the tile. I considered buying their tile, and felt
it was a good price, until I discovered they only sold the grout, etc., in
very small, high-priced bags, so that the cost of it was almost as much as
the cost of the tile!
