Along with my wife's American Express (Amex) card came an "Agreement Between Cardmember and American Express Company". Under the section entitled "Use of Cards" there is the sentence: "We reserve the right to deny authorization of any Charge." Amex denied a charge my wife tried to make. My wife tried to put some airline tickets on her Amex card through our travel agent. Travel agent calls Amex. Amex calls wife, requesting a bank account number for verification that we had the money to pay for the tickets. The number was not available to her at work. We ended up putting the charges on our VISA cards. Many people who I know believe that they have an unlimited ability to put charges on their American Express Cards, and that it just has to be paid off at the end of the month. We will no longer assume that we have unlimited credit on our American Express cards, and will strongly consider getting rid of them. To us, one of the purposes of having the Amex card was that if you are stuck someplace, having the Amex card might help get you unstuck. We can no longer count on this feature. -- --Seth Alford Tektronix Walker Road PO Box 4600 MS 92-823 Beaverton OR 97075 tektronix!teklds!setha (503)-629-1145

I just got my first Amex statement in the mail. I was billed an annual mmembership fee of $35, just like the application said I would be. Is the $45 fee just for renewals? -- Brian C. Carty AT&T Bell Laboratories - Piscataway, NJ ..!{ihnp4|allegra}!whuts!bccarty
