[net.consumers] TRW follies

>GOOD LUCK with those TRW a*s h*les!!! I had a run in with them a couple

I had Sears give me a new credit card number when I moved to CA.
Sears messed up the number being reported to TRW, so I went to TRW to
have them contact Sears and straighten it out. Since an office was a
block from ny condo, I figured going in person would get things
fixed easier. Ha! It was like talking to a brick wall. After about
the fifth "I'm sorry, that's what Sears tells us so we put it in
the file," I glanced at a plaque on the wall. It was a 15 year
service award for the moron I was talking at!
I've also happened to notice that almost all the workers for TRW
were of a certain ethnic persuasion, and I have had many
similar encounters since. I've stuck to mailing my complaints,
then calling when they mess up. They won't talk to you on
the phone on the first contact.

On the other hand I've had very good response from CBI, which
reports on mainly the Bay area. Once you get through to them
(a phone that'll repeat dial until it rings helps) there is
some intelligence onthe other end of the line.

There's some relevant information in today's (8/3) N.Y. Times:

To check your credit rating, write to TRW (Box 271, Parsippany, NJ
07054), CBI (708 Third Avenue, New York, NY 10017) or Trans Union
Credit Information Company (95-25 Queens Boulevard, Rego Park, NY
11374). Include name, spouse's name, address, addresses for the past
five years, social security number, year of birth, and a $10 money
	order.

If there's inaccurate information included, the *Federal* Fair Credit
Reporting Act requires that the *credit agency* [emphasis mine]
contact the creditor, and make appropriate changes. If the creditor
does not agree that the information is wrong, you're allowed to insert
a statement of your own, which must be included with future credit
	reports.

Bankruptcies can remain in your file for 14 years; most other
unfavorable information must be removed after 7 years.
