Water Purifier Wanted!

Can anybody recommend a good water purifier? I would like to attach
one to my sink so that I am sure that the water we drink is safe.
(I live in Silicon Valley, where there are notorious chemicals in the
water.)

I've been looking around, and it looks like there are only two types:
o the very cheap, that don't do a very good job, and
o the very expensive (ie $400 and up).

Does anyone out there in net-land know of any good water-purifiers
that remove all these nasty chemicals and that are not too expensive.

(P.S. A chemist friend recommended that it be attached under the sink
for fear that air and bacteria might get into the on the faucet
variety.)

If you mail me the comments, I'll be glad to summarize and post them.
I'm sure that a number of people will be interested.
