Graphite rods must be carefully wrapped with reinforcing near the ferule because the internal fibers don't have good adhesion with one another. Most of the failures in graphite rods I've seen split near the ferule. When buying a graphite rod be sure to check for reinforcing thread wrappings around the female side of the ferule. A good graphite fly rod is far superior to any fiberglas counterpart. There are poor graphite rods on the market, though. Mike McNelly hplabs!hpfcla!mike
