Goop & gojo are great but grating your fingernails over a bar of soap
before you get dirty keeps them from getting dirty in the first place.

I once met an auto mechanic at a party.  His hands, knuckles 
and fingernails were immaculate.

When I asked how he did this he said he applied 
Vaseline Intensive Care Lotion liberally before diving into the grease.
He claimed his hands were much easier to clean with this pre-treatment;
further, degreasing solvents didn't cause his skin to crack.
