Special gifts I remember:

	As a kid:  an airplane inner tube (found at a local airport)
		   the box a refrigerator came in--and 64 crayons
		   the Encyclopedia Britannica
		   a LONG ribbon, which wound around the house and
		      finally led to a puppy

	As a grownup:  buying three books of my choice
		       a VCR
		       three days vacation in the redwoods
		       buying jewelry of my choice

Maybe this question could also be referred to net.women.
I suspect you might get more helpful answers if you specified a maximum
price range, whether the woman in question liked surprises, and a few
other helpful hints.
