[net.consumers] house info wanted

<<chomp, chomp, chomp>>
A couple of questions for the net regarding houses (I hope this is the right
place for them):
1. what is a "doll house ranch"? I've seen the term in the classifieds and
have know idea what it refers to.
2. I'm looking for a house and the prospect of building something new appeals
to me. It would be very modest (3br, lr, dr, kit, 1.5bath) but I would build
it so it could be expanded easily. Anyone have any "experience" in this area?
Is building *very* expensive? I've seen adds that say "starting as low as
$80,000" by builders. I've also seen lots for 40,000 in a nice area. Houses
there are selling for >130,000. 80,000+40,000=120,000 so I could spend 10K
on "amenities" (landscaping, ...) and still be ahead of the game. Or am I
really missing something? I know I have a lot of research to do but any info
on building your own home, hidden costs, disadvantages, etc. would be very
much appreciated. Anyone have any experience with "prefabs"? Anyone been
burned? How long does it take to build? How much for a foundation, plumbing,
electric? For reference, I'm looking at Bergen County, NJ but info from anyone
anywhere is welcomed. I know labor costs vary - I'll take location into account

Email is fine and dandy; I'll summarize repsones to the net if there is
sufficient data/interest. Thanks *very* much for your time.
