[net.consumers] United Consumers Buying Club

I tried to mail this directly to you but it failed twice.

My husband and I joined this club about 9 months ago. At first I was
also worried and I posted something to this news group *after* we joined
just as you did. The first thing we purchased was a waterbed and
bedroom furniture. We priced it at Big Sur and based on Big Sur's price
we payed for our membership from the money we saved with this purchase
(it was somewhere around 700$ cheaper at UCC). Since then we have used the
club for a variety of things. The ONE thing I will warn you about is the
6% "handeling" fee they charge on many items you order. SOMEtimes on smaller
items you end up not saving anything once you add on the 6%.
Then, a few weeks ago we wanted to buy a crib. It was on sale at
a local store so right away we went over to the UUC to compare the price.
For some reason, they not only added 6% onto the base price of the crib, BUT
they also tacked on 35$! This made the crib more expensive at UUC.
However, had the crib NOT been on sale at this other store, then the UUC
price would have been cheaper (even with the 6% and 35$ added on).

As for "never being able to join again", we were also told that, but shortly
after we joined the UUC in our home town, we got a call from another
UUC branch downtown (so apparently we could have joined it that second
time).

Overall, I think it's a good thing to join. You can get much better
selections of merchandise (for example, Big Sur did NOT carry a lot of the
bedroom set peices from the one set we liked and when we looked at UUC
we were surprised to see so many other components to the set that we
could order).
