[net.consumers] Reliable Contractors ? Anybody??!!!

vas@lzaz.UUCP (V.SNYDER) (11/14/85)

How does a novice at hiring contractors go about hiring one? We just
bought a home a few months ago and have not had much good luck getting
anyone to do work or show up! We hired a contractor to do prep and
paint work and had to let him go because he was causing more damage
than getting anything done. We ended up doing all the work ourselves.
We can't hire a lawn service to do our lawn. We've called 15 places
in the Monmouth County area and no one returns calls. Some one
showed up to give an estimate on fertilizing our lawn and said they
would be by Monday for the first application. That was three weeks
ago and no one has shown up to date. We hired an unemployed person
to rake the lawn and mow it. He called two hours later and said
he didn't want to do the job because it would take two days!! The
next day, my husband and I did it ALL by ourselves!! Do we have
the word SUCKER written all over our face or what? We live in
Monmouth County, New Jersey. Does anyone have any hints? Agencies
with information? We gladly will pay the going rate just to have
some help! I'm 5 months pregnant and work, my husband works 2 jobs
and we still manage to do all the work above. I don't think we'll
be able to last much longer. We need some additional work done on
this house.
