See this months Consumers Reports! They have an excellent article on ultrasonic humidifiers. This report includes such things as capacities, time between refills, coverage, safety, etc. One point worth mentioning is that compared to swamp cooler varieties the ultrasonic units seemed to kill fungi and molds that grow in standing water. A Toshiba unit was rated #1.

Also, they are of very small capacities and not suitable for whole homes. If you have to use a portable humidifier for a large area, the only big ones are those at sears. They have the capacity and reservoir size to do the job.

I personally am interested in a quiet, room-sized humidifier for my bedroom, to keep the air moist while I sleep. I have very sensitive hearing in the high frequency ranges (traffic lights, dog whistles, security systems) and I have wondered if the ultra-sonic humidifiers are actually silent. Does anyone have any experiece wtih this ? -- jcpatilla
