[net.consumers] Replacing old style house Radiators with new baseboard Radiators

sieg@bocar.UUCP (B A Siegel) (11/18/85)

We recently bought an older house which contains the old style cast iron
radiators (40 inches high, 15 inches wide with 4-5 tubes? ) in each room.
I believe theses are steam driven. I would like to replace all (maybe only
some, if possible) of these old radiators with the newer baseboard style.
Our boiler is gas driven and I don't want to tamper with it.

My reasons for this are:
       -They take up less room:
-The old cast iron radiators get awfulhot and I'm afraid my little
son may burn himself touchiong them.
-If I simply make a radiator cover it doen't distribute the heat as well.

I think that the newer baseboard radiators are hot water driven but do they
also come steam driven?

Can I simply replacing the old style radiator with the new baseboard type?

Do I have to change the piping (at the radiator) at all?

Any estimates of costs?

Has anyone else ever attempted this? OR can it be done?
