[net.consumers] DAK - modem

flanagan@lasspvax.UUCP (Douglas Flanagan) (11/22/85)

I am reposting the following to net.comsumers because I had no response
from net.periphs. Also, I heard there was a discussion about DAK going
on over here.

I have been asked to get a 1200 baud smart modem for as little money as
possible. Here is one that I found that sounds like a good deal, but is it?

Modem: 1200 Baud Smart Duck
Price: $169 + $6 P&H
Available from: DAK Industries Inc.
	        Winter 1986 catalog, page 9
Made by: ADC, division of BSR
(Maybe I'm dumb, but what is ADC? -or BSR even, although the letters
           sound familiar.)
Description: 1200 baud modem, Hayes compatible, with
"more screen displays and a help menu",
and "day, date and time, an extra phone jack and
auto tone/pulse switching". Also has an auto-redial
	     feature.

Does anyone have this modem, and if so, how do you like it? Is
it reliable? Does it differ from a Hayes Smartmodem 1200 in any way?
Since we already have a Hayes, life would be easiest if the new one
was Hayes compatible. If the above modem is no good, do you have any
other suggestions?

Please respond by mail. I will post a summary if there is worth while info.

Thank you.

I bought the ADC modem from DAK and I have been using it for several
weeks. It is a Hong Kong clone of a SmartModem and responds to the standard
Hayes command strings. That's the good news. The bad news is that the
manual contains a number of typos and mis-information. Also, the technical
support phone number in the manual is wrong, there is no technical support.
Finally, it (the manual) boasts of several extended commands that are not
supported by Hayes. These commands include a help menu with several levels
of help. Unfortunately, only the first level really exists in the modem's
firmware.
I tried to reach DAK over there 800 number a (large number of tries) but
I was unable to get through. I tried calling the real number but I was inter-
cepted by a secretary. Finally, in frustration, I wrote a letter to Drew
Alan Kaplan (Mr. DAK). About a week later someone from DAK called me back to
tell me that the problem with the help menu was known to them and I could
take it or return it (they would pay for return shipping.)
Overall, I'm satisfied with it. The price is right. If there's a
problem with it repairs might be difficult to come by. I hope this is of some
help to you.

My question: Is it so cheap, that noise is a bigger than usual problem?
