[net.consumers] more on equal access

cc-06@ucbcory.BERKELEY.EDU (Ilya Goldberg) (12/14/85)

Now that equal access is becoming reality all over the country,
it won't be necessary to dial long access codes in order to use the long
distance company of your choice - all these companies will be directly
connected to your local switching office.

I still have some questions for those of you on the net who are
more familiar with the subject:

How (or by which company) will the 800 numbers be carried?

How (or by which company) will international (overseas) calls be
handled?

Will AT&T be the only company offering directory assistance, collect,
billed to the third number, and other operator assisted calls?

And finally, will all those rotary-type phones be able to dial
anywhere again?

> How (or by which company) will the 800 numbers be carried?
AT+T no matter what 1+ company you choose.

However, your long distance company handles them.
This point is still a little fuzzy to me if you dial
a country your long distance company does not service
but I would imagine you would just get a tape recording.

No. Each company offers their own services. Only
AT+T offers operator assisted calls these days but...

They always could in the past (011 for international calls)
and will be able to in the future (except for some special
            fetures, etc).
