Any recommendations on small portable cool mist humidifiers? The one I currently have is a Kaz and although it works well, it is very noisy. It doesn't seem to disturb my 2 1/2 year old daughter's sleep, but it sure annoys me when I use it. I hope there are other alternatives besides the Sears Sonic Mist humidifier on sale for $129.00. This one is a pleasure but since I want to buy a couple of them, the price is a little steep. Any suggestions??? Thanks in advance. Barb Nemeth bellcore!pyuxa!barb

[Barb Nemeth@bellcore!pyuxa!barb inquires:] > Any recommendations on small portable > cool mist humidifiers? I bought my Panasonic ultrasonic humidifier on sale here in NJ for $70 at TOPS appliances. I think places like Consumer's Distributing, or Service Merchandise have similar devices at similar prices. It is very quiet. It makes a slight hissing sound because a fan is used to blow air through the unit. On the positive side, it has a filter on the fan, so it catches some dust. It has a humidity control, and automatically shuts off when empty. Now the bad news - if you have hard water, the minerals will settle out as a white dust. And that dust goes everywhere. That is why I am not using mine until I decide on a solution. There are filters you can place in the tank to absorb the minerals. I wonder if the kitchen sink Water-pick filter will do equally well? Most of these thing appear to be identical internally, with major differences in humidifier controls. One caution: They like clean soft water, i.e. not softened artifically. Mine 'lime' up every 2-3 days. This is because of our local water only. I clean it with a lime dissolver product which works fine. gpw -- George Wilkin AT&T Network Systems usenet ihnp4!ihlpf!gpw 312-979-6593 work

The model which I bought (for $80 at the Harvard Coop), the Bionair 200, has a replacable demineralization cartridge as part of the unit, as well as a couple of test strips which determine how hard your water is (and thus how long the cartridge will be expected to last.) At least in the Boston area, and probably most of New England, we have very soft water, and the mineral dust probably wouldn't be a problem. -- /Steve Dyer {harvard,seismo}!bbnccv!bbncc5!sdyer sdyer@bbncc5.ARPA
