The last few articles on UPC scanners brought up some nasty problems at the supermarket, including missing prices, mischarging, incomparable unit pricing, etc. It requires a great deal of effort on our part to see that we don't get stung, and even more effort to put pressure on our local markets to correct these abuses. Yet if we do nothing, the abuses will only get worse. The competitive marketplace should be a sufficient control, but it does not seem to be working. The average consumer is neither alert, nor very concerned. Its for these reasons that I support Consumer's Union and CALPIRG. In an ideal world, I would not need to, but I see no alternative. I'm interested in finding out other ideas for combatting this problem. Let's discuss it further. _Greg J.
