As I recall, this was not always the case. The owner of Tuborg bought out Carlsberg. But, curiouser and curiouser, old man Tuborg left his estate to the Royal Danish Academy of Science, which now owns both breweries. I always loved that story, and both beers, so I hope it's true. -- *** *** =================== Nearly, but not quite. Tuborg and Carlsberg were separate, all right, but there were two Carlsbergs, Gamle (Old) Carlsberg and Nye (New) Carlsberg. There was some kind of a policy difference among (?) the family, and they split a long time ago. Nye Carlsberg was a non-profit organization with professors (of the University of Copenhagen?) on the board of directors ex-officio. What would have been profits in another brewery were given to the Arts and Sciences in Denmark. Nye Carlsberg also pioneered in many ways in reducing pollution and in recycling waste, long before it was a popular topic. I always used to buy Carslberg for political reasons (it doesn't taste as good here as the higher-grade Carlsbergs taste in Denmark). How Tuborg and Carlsberg joined, and what is the current status of Gamle Carlsberg, I don't know. Nowadays I drink normal Canadian beer. -- Martin Taylor {allegra,linus,ihnp4,uw-beaver,floyd,ubc-vision}!utzoo!dciem!mmt
