[net.consumers] gutters?

kolling@decwrl.DEC.COM (Karen Kolling) (01/23/86)

I have to replace the gutters on my house, and I'd appreciate any info
people have about aluminum vs. galvanized, the worth of screening to
keep out leaves, and, if you're in the Palo Alto, Calif. area, any
recommendations or warnings about specific companies. I've heard
that: aluminum is the only way to go because it doesn't rust,
aluminum is a big mistake because it bends when a ladder is against
it, screening is a big win, screening is a big loss because debris
will collect in the gutters anyway, and when they're screened you
can't clean them out easily. I don't normally read this
newsgroup, so please send mail to me at one of the electronic addresses
below. Thanks, Karen

There are also now plastic gutters. It put them on my mom's house
last summer. The method of mounting is superior, screws in brackets,
rather than nails through the gutters. They should never sag. The
joints have rubber seals, no caulking. They standout from the faceing
board so they don't hold water on the wood and cause rot.
There were two problems I had with them. One, since they standout
from the faceing board 1/2" or so, drip edge is need if it isn't
already there. Two, some of the guttering was over sized and didn't
snap into the joints and brackets they way it should have. A quick
file job fixed this.
On whole I would recommend plastic.

I got tired of taking the screens off my gutters to clean them
out! I finally removed them completely and the job takes half
the time.
