[net.consumers] Those good-for-your-back chairs

akhanna@bbncc5.UUCP (Atul C Khanna) (01/31/86)

I'm considering the purchase of one of those chairs that is supposed
to discourage slouched backs and other unhealthy back postures - I
believe the original chair was called/made-by Balans. I'd appreciate
information, both on personal experiences as well as on brand
names, good deals, etc.

Thanks.

This chairs are indeed great for your back but my experience has been
that sitting in them for more than a few minutes is really hard on your
knees (at least if you have rickety ones, like mine). You might want to
use one on a trial basis to find out how comfortable it is for you.

I own both the balans (I keep one at the office), and several styles of
the cheap imitations (use those at home). I did keep the "expensive"
balans at home, but the cheapo chairs (none of them) gave my back the
relief the balans does after hours of work.

Some of my friends like the Balans chair, but I cannot use one for
more than about 30 minutes without a lot of back pain. I think that
the moral is--try it before you buy it.

I think the best ones if you don't want to spring for the original
Balans chair are the cheaper imitations of it. There are some
adjustable ones on the market that don't seem to be quite as
comfortable as the Balans-style ones. Someone mentioned that the
degree of "give" might be important. From my experience, I would
say that this sounds reasonable. Also the adjustable one that I
have does not seem to work all that well with the desk that my
terminal is on. It's one of those erogenomic desks that are just
a little lower than a regular desk. Knowhutahmean Vern?
