I thought it might serve as an indication to the rest of you that we
can indeed make this stuff illegal.

                   HOUSE APPROVES BAN ON CALLS

by MONTE PLOTT and SAM HOPKINS

The Georgia House of Representatives has unanimously passed a bill that
would prohibit the use of computerized telephone calls to sell services.

The bill, sponsored by State Rep. Cathey W. Steinberg (D-Atlanta), would
make it a misdemeanor for businesses to call individuals with recorded
sales messages. They would be allowed to use computer equipment for
calls only if a "live" operator first asked the individual's permission
to play the message.

The measure, which now goes to the Senate, would not prohibit
computerized calls by non-profit organizations. Neither would it
prohibit recorded messges sought by the caller, such as time and
temperature services.

Rep. Steinberg said unsolicited automated calls had prompted a flood of
complaints from individuals and corporations. "One hospital reported
getting five (recorded) calls to its operating room during surgery",
she said.
