[net.bio] Molecular Workstation project canned

donn@sdchema.UUCP (Donn Seeley) (02/29/84)

For what it's worth, the UC San Diego Chemistry Dept. NIH Research
Resource has been dismantled. The principal investigator decided not
to reapply for an RR grant. This was against the recommendations of
the staff and followed several months of continuation funding from NIH
to provide time to prepare a new grant proposal.

The original proposal was to put together Unix-based workstations that
would provide heavy computing power and high performance graphics for
reduced cost to academic biology and chemistry facilities around the
country. It was intended that the workstation run all our advanced
software packages for molecular modelling and refinement, 2-D gel
analysis, X-ray crystallography, DNA sequence analysis and and
molecular dynamics simulations. An initial survey of university labs
disclosed hundreds of parties who were interested in such a
workstation, and on this basis we made a proposal to NIH DRR. NIH was
not satisfied with this initial proposal but they provided continuation
funding so that it could be redrafted. After stalling for 6 months,
our PI decided that he could get funds for his own research from other
sources and avoid the hassles and responsibilities of running an RR, so
he told NIH that he wasn't going to submit a revised proposal after
all. The RR staff were told they could quit or work for the department
directly.

I am sending out this note because several people on the net expressed
interest in the workstation concept and they might like to know what
happened to it.

Looking for work,
