A few years back, in the middle 70's I think, a team from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute discovered life forms that utilize chemo-synthesis for food production. The reasearch team, using the submersible ALVIN, discovered a region near undersea vents that was, until then, un-expected. There were many forms of life there, some were thought to be new specimens/species. The vents were at depths where *life* was thought to be rare. This was due to the lack of sun light and the extreme pressures at these depths. Upon further investigation, it was determined that this was an eco-system that was based on *chemo*-synthesis instead of *photo*-synthesis. Since then have any major discoveries been made concerning this? If I remember correctly, there were other similiar eco-systems discovered at other undersea vents at differant locations. What effect/affect has this discovery had on the field of bology? What possibilities does this open up in the genetic/bio-engineering fields? Does anyone have some recent information/facts/speculations on this subject? Please send replies to IHNP4!IHUXJ!AMRA or POST to this news group. I am *NOT* a biologist, so please respond accordingly. Thanks For your information/input/opinions. They are always read and appreciated. PEACE & BEST WISHES From the ever curious mind of: Steve Aldrich (ihnp4!ihuxj!amra)
