[net.bio] chromosome recognition systems-automated-any out there?

davison@bnl44.UUCP (Dan Davison) (05/15/85)

I've been asked to think about designing a computer system which is capable
of recognizing chromosomes. This seems pretty esoteric to me, but in case
anyone knows of any automatic karyotyping systems or even rumors, guesses,
scandal, etc. I'd like to hear about it.

The system would "only" have to recognize various chromosomes of the same
organism, not different ones. I imagine there'd have to be some pretty
sophisticated software for dealing with pattern recognition of chromosome
banding, plus compensating for the distortions inherent in the process
(compression or expansion in all three planes).

Anyway, if anyone has heard of anything like this, I'd like to hear from
you. Thanks in advance.
