Peak's comment that international signs never have written information on them, and that therefore the red octagon is not an international road sign is not altogether correct. The red octagon stop sign is the US's only contribution to international road signage. It was not in the original set, but was added in the 70's. Thge letters STOP are not needed for it's recognition as a stop sign, although most countries use them. Interestingly enough, in France the word STOP is used, but in Quebec they use ARRET. The inverted red bordered triangle, meaning YIELD, is even used in the US both with and without added lettering.
