*** REPLACE THIS LINE WITH YOUR MESSAGE *** This is about the Northern Bytes newsletter. In case you haven't seen it, it is mailed free to all computer clubs and users groups WHO EXCHANGE NEWSLETTERS with them. It has a lot of good information in it, proving again that the models I/III/4/4P aren't dead. Although many of the articles are slanted toward these machines, and NEWDOS/80, there are also many about the CoCo as well. These are all machines that are underrated in the "real world" by so many of us, but when was the last time YOUR micro could search all drives for a file or program, reroute I/O, reconfigure with one or two DOS commands, etc. And although they are "8 bit" machines, for most applications that is enough. Only largew amounts of number crunching requires more. True, 8x(x)86/8 and 680x0 can address more memory, but what good is it? The 86/8 can only use 64K for program and 64K for data without "bank switching" anyway. (albiet in chip bank switching) And the 68K, while less limited to banks, has very limited low cost hardware support. (Exception: the Atari 130/520ST if and when they become available) The z80 with its duplicate register sets is a very powerful chip, which I am told was designed to bank select up to 1Meg ram. And the CoCo with its 6809 has the bank select hardware built in, too. OS-9 on the CoCo supports two terminals, three jobs. So let's see a little more action to this news group, OK? J.
