The volunteer fire department to which I belong has red trucks and we don't expect to change that. We have discussed it at length, though, and it seems that some highway safety agency did a study of the visibility of various colors and found that the fluorescent green-yellow (typically called Lime Green) was the most visible under the most conditions, especially fog. It's also interesting to note that the City of Pittsburgh fire department, in a fit of civic pride, ordered all of their new trucks to be painted black and gold, to match the Steelers' and Pirates' uniforms. The trucks are sharp looking, but I doubt that it helps the safety issue any. My personal opinion is that the majority of fire truck accidents are caused by carelessness of the fire truck driver, rather than by the lack of visibility of his vehicle. ---Bob Hoffman, Pitt CS P.S. My apologies to the net for being serious... the article that started this discussion was obviously intended to be humorous! :-)
