[net.misc] pointless debates

I heartily agree with the suggestion that it's time to
restore a little frivolity to net.misc.(But what do I
know? I think creationism is frivolous. (-: ).
How about a debate on the esthetic merits of yellow
firetrucks?

Are you kidding? Yellow firetrucks will clash with flame red (orange?).

I think yellow fire trucks are pretty--
especially the greenish-yellow ones.

The reason fire trucks are yellow is visibility. Turns out the lime
green ones are the most visible. Most people find this a little too
sick so they settle on yellow. Red is nearly invisible at night. All
the fire trucks in my department (Baltimore County, MD) are being changed
over to yellow as they are repainted.

I'm sorry, yellow just doesn't comes out and say "fire" the way red does.
I think I'd have my town council men drawn and quartered if they ever had
the audacity to even consider buying a yellow fire truck.

Next thing you know, you'll want to make ROUND stop signs, or make the dash in
the middle of the road be green or something.

Well, we've got yellow-green fire trucks now. We had yellow police cars
for a while a few years ago, but the `banana-mobiles' met with a lot of
ridicule. One of the main reasons for getting rid of them is that they
didn't look like patrol cars; people didn't see them as well(!)

There is "good psychological evidence" that yellow is a better color
than red. The automatic responses to the colors are

red - danger - panic - what do I doooooo?
yellow - wake up - action - (what ever is appropriate)
loud siren you can hear seven blocks away - stop for coffee and donuts

And the lines on roads should be small reflectors (like they have in England)
that 1) do not get worn off in six months
     2) are very visible at night
     3) are called cat's eyes to avoid confusion.

"That's called "improvisation" - not making it up as you go along."

In this part of the world, it would depend which six months you had
in mind. "Cat's eyes" are probably vulnerable to snowplow blades.
They are fitted on the faces of flexible pads that stick up above
the road surface but are easily pressed down by tyres. They look
as if a snowplow blade would take them right out.

Where snowplows don't live, cat's eyes are a great idea.

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear -- I didn't mean to imply that
the letters "STOP" were an international symbol, but rather that the
octagonal red field (on which you can write "STOP", "HALT", "ALTO" or
whatever strikes your fancy) is an international symbol.

I thought they were greenish-yellow because that color
was shown to be the most visible, especially at dawn and dusk.

What do I know?
