This is net.flame 1/12-1/19 summary... Discussion subjects in net.flame are: 1) The desirability/undesirability of wombats. This is a completely silly discussion indended (or so this author thinks) to demonstrate the true importance of net.flame 2) How to deal with tailgators (sic). <Is that something like alledgators? ed> This discussion concerns the safety and desirability of blocking roads and/or flashing brake lights when tailgated. 3) The reasonableness, etc, of the 55 mph speed limit. Evolving currently from 2). 4) The undesirability of debates on wombats. See 1) 5) Continuing simmering about misuse of words, spelling, punctuation, etc. <We'll see if this sentence brings out the diction critics.> There are several other subjects, notably complaints about UUCP's alledged brain damage, that don't seem to be attracting much participation. Read at your own risk. Major participants are the usual... TEDDY BEARS ARE PEOPLE, TOO! (allegra, harpo, ulysses)!rabbit!jj

Review of net.flame 1/19 - 1/23 by rabbit!jj The tailgating flames of last week are slowly changing into a discussion of the safety of the 55 mph limit, its legality, the moral fibre of those who defy it, and ways to change it. Predominant are flames for/against speeding, and flames for/against requiring slower drivers to yield the left lane on superhighways regardless of speed. Up and coming is a discussion of bus speeds, seats, and comfort thereof. The wombat flames have changed, and appear to be dying out. The last discussions were to offer a "conservative wombat" for president in 1984. Flaming about the existance of the wombat debate seems limited to two or three vocal people. The legality/morality of the USA is a new topic. Included are 1) A highly inflamitory article from Canada, critical of the US and its citizens. 2) Several very emotional defenses of the US, ranging from the "Love it or leave it" response <to a Canadian, yet> to accusations regarding the intent of the article, to angry responses claiming that the article was inflamitory. 3) A burgoning debate on the morality/effects/appropriateness of sending the US's food surplus overseas, and the effects that it would have on the farmers, economy, future crops, and most importantly from the net's viewpoint, the recipients of the food. This one looks like it will grow. Other new topics: The effects/sense of legalizing and regulating prostitution, including the effects on "customers" as well as prostitutes and pimps. Looks like it will be a rather less emotional argument, except along sin/religion lines. The sinfulness of New York State, concerning lotteries, horse racing, OTB, etc. Small runner, with strong feelings. The economic state of the USA, Reagan's effect on same, and the desirability of Reaganomics. <Highly emotional> (Anti) smoking flames. Looks like the anti's have the numbers, and the pro's are silent.

Net.flame 1/23-/27 by rabbit!jj (this was to be part of the last net.flame report, but the mailer bit) The 55 mph debate is dying out. There seem to be no pro-55's, and an infinite supply of anti-55's. The great wombat debate is also dying out, with occasional fits and starts. It looks like this one has run the course and passed out. Of course, the last four articles were all long wombat articles. Perhaps it hasn't lost its attraction yet. The discussion on world hunger has gotten vituperitive++ and moved to net.politics. The flaming on this subject is approaching plasma fusion temperatures on both sides, see net.politics for examples. The debate on state run prostitution/lotteries, etc is tapering off, what discussion there is centers on the question of slavery, although not stated in that fashion. The Reaganomics ravings seem to have been extinguished. There has been some mention of GASP, ASH, and non-smokers groups in general. Not too much flaming. Tailgating is still in, but the subject header seems to be covering a general discussion on the evils of driving rather than comments specifically on tailgating. New Subjects: As yet unformed flaming on the State of the Onion address. The only notes so far are the usual negative comments, but they haven't started any debate yet. Spelling plains. Not new, but restarted. The articles are of an ad-hominem (sp) nature that has brought about some flame-backs. sigh. <zzzzz> Vegamite/marmite discussion seems to have been revived, in the negative, as far as the subject is concerned. Psychic research flaming has leaked over from wherever it's been going for the last week. All over comments: Not like the first half of the week. Skip it, unless it's something you care about.

Net.flame review, 2/4-2/11, by rabbit!jj. About 175 Articles. <whew!> Subjects that are still running: Wombats: the Wombat menace has been officially killed off. An article relates the actual demise of the wombat menace! Tailgating: Mostly restatement of previous articles and a bit of gratuitous ad-hominem flaming. The real issue now seems to be the intellegence/patriotic standing/economic welfare/responsibility of those who tailgate/roadblock. <Snore> Anti-tobacco comments: Still smoking away, mostly ashes now. Discussion on the merits of seatbelts, mandatory seatbelt laws, air bags, insurance as related to protective devices, contributory neglegence, and the like. From tailgating debate. See comments for tailgating heading. The subject of banks and banking regulations has continued. The two sides are "(*&^^(*^ banks" and "move your money". Seems like there's an opportunity for some useful comments here, but it hasn't been made yet. Two or three interested dogmatic types have been exchanging comments on the US economy and Reagan's (presumed) effects thereto. Comments about really weird TV advertisors. Current geographical areas under discussion are Seattle and Kansas City, Mo. Many more areas heard from by the end of the week. Frank Perdue and Crazee Eddie getting strongest mention, or at least the drawing the most hate. Many other entries now. Important to those who submit articles on advertisors. Comments spreading from elsewhere concerning government spending for psychic research. This has heated up a bit, with some pro/anti flaming, and some meta-flaming about the pro/anti flaming. One meta-meta flame. <sigh> New Subjects: None, really. Stale. mini-review. Lots of articles. Many words. Few thoughts. Bad week. Emotion and iconoclasts dominate. Facts and figures are hard to find.
