Digestified net.graphics for 1/27 - 1/3

		     This Week In net.graphics

		   	    Reported by
			   David Bryant
			 (djb@cbosgd.uucp)

HELP WANTED DEPARTMENT:
     *	An appeal was made for assistance in converting a FORTRAN program
into UNIX f77, with provisions for supporting the PLOT10 library.
Interested in either direct output to 4010/4027 or (even better)
an interface to the UNIX plot(1) "package". Contact km@emory.uucp
	if you can help.

     *	A request for a source of the Hidden Surface Removal package that
Ken Turkowski posted to net.sources back in December. Contact
	danl@ogcvax.uucp if you can help.

TOPICS OF CONVERSATION:
     *	Continued discussion on animation output techniques, with particular
interest in computer output to videotape.

     *	New topic - Is there a good way to generate a graphical display of
the subroutine call trace for a complex program? In particular:

	     1)	How do you do this locally ("zoomed in" on a section of code)
	     2) How do you do this globally so that only the most
		significant structural information is presented?
	     3) Exactly what branch of knowledge does this fall into?
	     4) Is anybody working on this (VLSI folks, perhaps)?

For the most part, net.graphics has been net.graphics-wanted these past two
weeks, although there was some general traffic. Better luck next time...

     * Randolph Fritz (rf@wu1.UUCP) would like some pointers to graphics
	image compression techniques.
     * Request for suggestions on computer aids for creating slides:
	1) Are we better off putting money into a nice piece of hardware to
tie to our existing VAX/VMS systems, or should we be looking at
	   standalone, complete packages.
	2) What nice pieces of hardware/software do folk
	   have experience with? Any recommendations/warnings?
	3) Hardcopy?
Contact Mark Johnson (markj@alberta.UUCP) if you can help.

4105 in "native mode" (not vt100 or vt52 emulation mode).
     * Questions from Vidar Sorensenon (vidar@kvvax4.UUCP) UNIX System
III graphics package, particularly with respect to bug fixes, and
on using a HP7475 color plotter for output.
     * Does anyone out there have experience with Intelligent Systems Co.'s
VHR19 Color Graphics Terminal? Also, any experience with ISC's other
products and/or services would be appreciated. If so, contact
	Riedar Bornholdt (reidar@cucard.UUCP)

[As always, please contact any of the petitioners if you can help, or
drop me a line and I'll forward it along to the appropriate parties. - djb]

TOPICS:
*******

     * A special attration at this year's Eleventh Annual Conference on
Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques, SIGGRAPH'84, will
be a 10 minute OMNIMAX film of computer generated animation.
The film is being produced by SIGGRAPH'84 as a special feature of
the year's conference. The film will be shown at the Museum of
Science and Technology in St. Paul. (mwherman@watcgl.uucp)

     * The AIC (international organization for the study of all aspects
of colour) is proposing to have its interim meeting in central
Canada (Toronto is the first site suggested; others are possible.)
sometime in the early summer of 1986. The proposed topic for the
meeting is the use of colour in VDU's/computer graphics, and they
hope that the meeting can serve as an opportunity for people in
computer graphics to establish personal and/or working relationships
with people working in more traditional aspects of colour science.
	(samackay@watcgl.uucp)

     * ANSI (X3J2) graphics standard binding for Basic.
warner@orca.uucp is a delegate, and welcomes comments and further
	discussion.

     * GKS draft published in latest issue of SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics

Summary of net.graphics by David J. Bryant (djb@cbosgd.uucp)

TOPICS:
*******
     *	Graphics Interface '84 - 5/28 to 6/1 in Ottawa, Onatario.  Registration
materials and advance program provided by holtz@clan.UUCP. Looks to
	be an excellent conference.
     *	Summary of responses to a previous request for advice in making
	real-time computer-generated videotapes from individually-generated
single frame images. Thanks to norskog@fortune.uucp
     * Summary of responses to a previous request for info on fractals.
liberte@uiucdcs.UUCP is keeping a list of all known references, and
	is continuing the hunt.
     * Why is GKS being standardized instead of SIGGRAPH CORE? So far,
not much discussion on this one, and certainly no compelling
	evidence has been presented.

HELP WANTED:
************
     *	Anyone have pointers to a used 16mm movie camera suitable for doing
computer animation? Primary requirement is that the camera be able to
shoot single frames, preferably by remote control. Also, since
filming is done from a crt, the camera must have an available shutter
speed slower than 1/30. [contact: jpj@mss.UUCP]
     *	Has anybody gotten the NCAR graphics package running under 4.xBSD?
	[contact: ravi@eneevax.UUCP]
     * Any known sources to electronically stored terrain maps? [contact:
minarik@stolaf.UUCP] Responses so far include USGS, a company
called GeoSystems, and the Defense Mapping Agency. (Thanks to
	rusty@sdccsu3.UUCP, cwc@uw-june.UUCP, and chip@dartvax.UUCP for
	their help.)
     *	Looking for a good reference book on alignment and calibration of
the sort of video equipment found in TV studios. A handbook aimed at
the chief engineer of a television studio would be about right.
	[contact: dmmartindale@watcgl.UUCP] One response (from
dw@utcsrgv.UUCP) mentioned several very techincal books available
from Howard W. Sams Publishing Co. that might do the trick.
     *	Is there a publically-available, machine-readable database of the
	Hershey font? [contact: tc@amd70.UUCP]

FOR SALE:
*********
     *	Tektronix 4114A display with extras (extended communication, 3 port
peripheral interface, 256K add'l RAM, 10 peripheral slots, dual
floppies). One year old and never used. Still under Tektronix
maintenance contract. Make an offer to lab@utcsrgv.UUCP or call
	Dave Galloway at (416) 978-5300.

TOPICS:
*******
     *	Sources for Ikonas driver for 4.2BSD
     *	Tom Edds (edds@unc.UUCP) posted a summary of responses to his
request for SIGGRAPH CORE software written in C (including some
info on GKS as well). There were several sources of such software,
indicating that quite a bit of work is going on out there...
     *	Early enthusiasm for SIGGRAPH '84 (plan now for July)
     *	Mesa Graphics will be marketing a Tek 4014 emulator for the
Macintosh that is scheduled for release around July 1 and will
run somewhere around $200-$300 (info courtesy of lra@aluxe.UUCP).
     * How about a software standard more suited for sophisticated
bitmap or raster-oriented graphics applications (something along the
lines of the Smalltalk "bitblit" or Macintosh "quickdraw").

HELP WANTED:
************
     *	bolte@unm-cs.UUCP is interested in RGB to NSCS signal conversion
methods (particularly for making videotapes from color displays).
Some helpful discussion has already taken place (thanks to
	dmmartindale@watcgl.UUCP and stepoway@smu.UUCP).
     *	Repeat of a request from nkg@iwu1b.UUCP for a UNIX GPS filter for HPGL
	plotters
     *	vidar@kvvax4.UUCP is looking for a GKS implementation with Pascal
	binding
     *	ben@hao.UUCP is interested in collecting user reports on workstations
roughly comparable to the Sun-2's and also on the new Canon-based
	laser printers.
     * stuart@rochester.UUCP is in need of conic sections rasterization
algorithms that are suitable for implementation on the Adage (Ikonas)
RDS-3001 frame buffer (meaning all integer arithmetic, no special
math support, etc). The Pitteway and Jordan/Lennon/Holm algorithms
have already been tried and found insufficiently robust.
     * sean@oddjob.UUCP is interested in graphics software that can drive
a VT100 with Advanced Video Option. This brought about discussion that
called into question the worthiness of graphics for such a limited
	device.
     *	gvw1@ihuxp.UUCP is looking for pointers to the NAPLPS Standard
	documntation.
     *	rick@steinmetz.UUCP would like suggestions for a low-cost, high res
RGB monitor (similar to the new Hitachi's, but available now).
