Over the years, I have had many requests for good titles of books on GO for the beginning player. The problem always seems to be that the books are either incredibly elementary and have little more than rules in them or are so sophisticated that you need to have played 10,000 games to understand them. As an excellent comprimise, I always recommend: How to Play GO; Shukaku Takagawa, Pub. The Nihon Ki-in, Japanese GO Association; 1956 I obtained my copy from the Ishi Press. This book has an excellent description of the rules at the start, and follows them through the necessary concepts to get a good start at the game. I also recommend it as remedial reading for just about anyone. D.
