Cromwell has a dual personality in English history. On the one hand he was a bloody tyrant and dictator who was well hated at and after his time; on the other, he led the revolution that destroyed the arbitrary power of the King and asserted the supremacy of Parliament. The fact that he immediately eliminated the power of Parliament is lost in the lasting value of the original assertion of Parliamentary powers and rights. For the one achievement he got a statue, for the other, his body was dug up and treated as that of a traitor. -- Martin Taylor {allegra,linus,ihnp4,uw-beaver,floyd,ubc-vision}!utzoo!dciem!mmt
