[net.nlang.celts] With tongue in cheek

ray@othervax.UUCP (Raymond D. Dunn) (12/16/85)

It is difficult to decide the correct newsgroup for this quote, but I
hope you find it amusing. It complements the current USA/Brit wars
going on in various categories:

"The British Isles, it is said, are inhabited by four nations.
The Scots, who keep the Sabbath, and everything else they can lay
 their hands on.
The Welsh, who pray upon their knees and upon their neighbours.
The Irish, who don't know what they want, but are willing to die for
 it.
And the English, who, considering themselves a race of self-made men,
thereby relieve the Almighty of a dreadful responsibility".

Author unknown.

..and a story told by Roy Gullane (of the Tannahill Weavers) about discerning
the differences in the different nationalities:

"..Just imagine there's been a plane wreck on a desert island. There are only
eight survivors: two Scots, two Irish, two Welsh, and two English.

By the end of the first day, the Scots have built a whiskey distillery.

By the end of the second, the Irish have drunk it.

By the end of the third, the Welsh have formed a choir,

but after 16 weeks the two English are still waiting to be introduced to
   each other!"
