The Great One is the original spider that came from the Earth ship. It is now as big as a three bedroom house. (We're talking more than one case of RAID!) The spider is constructing a device that will supposedly give it absolute power. It needs the last perfect power crystal that the Doctor has. It levitates the crystal in place and activates the machine. However, it has the machine feeding its own brainpower in a loop into its own brain. The power builds up and destroys her. The radiation in the cave destroys the Doctor's cells and he struggles back to the Tardis. The mountain blows up, destroying the rest of the spiders leaving the planet for the humans. The TARDIS gets stuck in a time loop and gets back to Earth three weeks later (Earth Time). He gets out, collapses, and the other Time Lord who was his teacher, who masqueraded as the Tibetan Master Yogi appears in a mental projection and gives the Doctor's cells a boost of energy to start the regeneration.
