Chicago playwright John Ostrander has acquired the exclusive stage
rights to "Dr. Who," the long-running science fiction television series.
Ostrander is adapting the 22-year-old BBC program, an international
hit with an estimated 98 million viewers in more than 35 countries. Plans
call for the stage production to open in Chicago by late spring or early
summer, although details haven't been worked out.
The series, telecast at 11 p.m. Sundays on WTTW-Ch. 11, follows the
adventures of a time-travelling scientist. Ostrander acquired the rights
to the show through negotiations in the last year.
His writing credits include "Bloody Bess," coauthored with William
J. Norris and produced at the Organic Theater, and "Dead of Night," which
played at the Body Politic. He has appeared in the Goodman Theatre's
"A Christmas Carol" and served as director for the Court Theater's
production of "Round and Round the Garden" by Alan Ayckbourn.
