I just recently saw the Tom Baker episode, The Brain of Morbius, and I have a question. When the doctor and Morbius were having their little mental chess game, or whatever it was called, several faces appeared. The first four I recognized as the odctor back to Hartnell. After that many other faces appeared. Were these previous incarnations of the doctor, before he left Gallifrey, or were these Morbius' incarnations? Also, who exactly won that little contest? After seeing Brain of Morbius for the 3rd time, I concluded that the faces pictured during the mind-bending contest were indeed supposed to represent the Doctor at various stages. This clearly contradicts the well known fact that the doctor has had only 5 (now 6) generations, so maybe it was a slip on the part of the writer (like putting the food-vendors in the transporter room in Startrek). Morbius was winning the contest (as his gloating suggested), but, as the Doctor planned, the excessive mental activity caused a buildup of static electricity in Morbius's brain-case and forced Morbius to withdraw from the contest. The sudden release of his brain-lock left the Doctor unconscious. --Sally Handy-Zarnstorff AT&T Bell Laboratories, Short Hills, NJ ..!ihnp4!hlexa!shz

A story from the 20th season of Dr. Who makes me believe that the unknown faces seen in the mind-bending contest were Morbius' early incarnations and NOT the Doctor's. In "Mawdryn Undead", the Doctor is confronted with the possibility of losing his "8 remaining regenerations" (Davison being the 4th regeneration) to save 8 men from living forever (hence "Mawdryn UNDEAD"). It is a well known fact that the Doctor is allowed 12 regenerations (i.e., 13 separate incarnations). The only way I can see that the faces could be the Doctor's is if he were granted some extra regenerations we don't know about. -- Lemon Curry??? You miss the point that Morbius was also a Time lord, and as such, had previous regenerations. The unknown faces were those of Morbius' earlier regenerations. The theory I have about the contest is that through force of will, one participant forces the other back through time to his beginnings. That is why they went backwards chronologically. The way that it can kill is through pushing the other back to start (birth) (conception) to where the other does not live, and therefor doesn't. Walt Pesch AT&T Technologies ihnp4!ihuxp!wbpesch

---------- This episode was on yesterday in L.A. It seemed to me that of the 12 faces that appeared between Morbius and the Doctor, 5 were aimed from the Doctor towards Morbius (about 3/4 face), of which the first was Tom Baker; and 7 were aimed from Morbius towards the Doctor. I hypothesize that we were seeing the past faces of both, not one or the other. Jim {decvax, vortex}!randvax!jim
